90% of Toronto families facing homelessness: Study
The findings are indicative of a crisis that is “very widespread and very serious,” researcher Emily Paradis said. A high-rise building in Toronto (File photo)

A new study shows nine out of 10 families occupying aging high-rises in Toronto’s low-income neighborhoods are living in inadequate housing and risk homelessness.
The University of Toronto study, released on Friday, showed half of those families live in overcrowded places and one third spend more than half their income on rent.
The results of the study were published on the same day that people staged nationwide rallies in Canada supporting the National Housing Day.
The findings are indicative of a crisis that is “very widespread and very serious,” researcher Emily Paradis said.
“I went into this knowing that the problem was huge,” said Paradis, who has studied homelessness affairs in the last 25 years. “I was struck, though, by the fact that nine out of 10 families are in housing that fails to meet basic standards of adequacy ... That was, to me, just indicative of such a crisis in housing for low-income families.”
More than 1,500 families with children living in rental apartment high-rises were questioned and the data were collected from surveys. Their houses were built between 1950 and 1979 in low-income areas. Nearly half of the tenants in Toronto live in such buildings.
The researcher recognized “indicators” of homelessness risk as housing that is unaffordable, overcrowded, unsafe, and insecure or in poor condition. Unaffordable housing is considered as that which costs over half of a family’s income.
According to the survey, half of the families lived in overcrowded houses and one third spent more than half of their monthly earnings on rent and other housing expenses. Almost one quarter lived in buildings that were unsafe or insecure. Nearly half of them reported living in ramshackle buildings, and 27 per cent had apartments that were in bad shape. One fifth was at risk of looming eviction.
Canadian families increasingly use shelters, but a large number of homeless families don’t go to shelters, said Paradis, adding, they live together with another family, relatives or friends, a situation referred to as “hidden homelessness.”
On Friday rallies, supporters of better housing conditions urged the federal government to protect housing subsidies, increase funding for inexpensive housing and develop a national housing strategy.                                                                                                                    HOMELESSNESS IN CANADA! Crimes...crimes... and crimes...Mrs. Kathleen Wynne?
Candice Malcolm

Candice Malcolm

Cynical
Please; Candice Malcolm. The people of this province are more realistic when we have to participate in the custom criminal pleas, with our wishes for better governance and a rational administration of provincial funds. Yes, Mrs. Kathleen Wynne she has full knowledge of the tyrannies committed in this province by the previous provincial governments; especially in the annihilation of poor families, persecution of people belonging to the minorities, and the mistreatment of injured workers as the mental torture inflicted by the workers of the system of Compensation. Again in the province we have other liberal ruler, she is bringing the same agenda plotted by their previous predecessors? The premier of Ontario, Mrs. Kathleen Wynne, she must know that she has  to govern with justice, revise and denounce  the criminal acts committed with provincial money, by the provincial and private institutions.                                         First posted: Sunday, December 28, 2014 05:48 PM EST Opinion Columnists

Twelve sour grapes for Premier Wynne

There’s an old Spanish tradition on New Year’s Eve to eat 12 grapes at the stroke of midnight, making a wish for each grape.
The 12 grapes represent the 12 months of the year.
Each grape is thought to bring good luck and fortune for the coming year.
The tradition is still celebrated throughout the Spanish-speaking world, including Mexico, where many Canadians find refuge from the cold winter during this holiday season.
So, to any Ontarians participating in this custom, here is a plea to wish for better governance in 2015. In case you’d like to be a bit more specific, here are 12 Ontario taxpayer wishes for 2015.
1. No new taxes
The Kathleen Wynne Liberal government continues to emphasize the need for new taxes, but Ontario taxpayers know better. New taxes will merely enable more spending. By taking more from hardworking Ontarians, the government will just create more budget problems for households across the province.
2. Get to the bottom of the gas plants fiasco
It’s been over three years, and we are still learning the sordid details surrounding the 2011 election decision to cancel two gas plants to save some Liberal seats. The latest — deleting computer hard drives in the premier’s office at a cost of $10,000 to taxpayers — demonstrates the need for a judicial inquiry into this dubious scheme and elaborate cover-up. Typically, only after the expenditure was exposed did the Liberals belatedly decide to pay it back from party funds.
3. Accountability for all involved
Uncovering the details of the gas plant mess should lead to accountability for former premier Dalton McGuinty and his staff who presided over it. In a just world, someone would be facing punishment.
4. End the government liquor monopoly
Ontarians are capable of making responsible choices without the government controlling where and when we can buy booze.
5. Break up the Beer Store
While throwing out the archaic, prohibition-era Liquor Control Board, it’s also time for Ontario to do away with its bizarre, government-granted beer monopoly.
6. Scrap the Green Energy Act (GEA)
Ontario’s GEA has been a disaster. Enough is enough. Hydro ratepayers can’t afford to be the guinea pig for expensive experiments with inefficient, unreliable energy.
7. Cancel new wind and solar projects
Recent hydro rate increases are largely caused by the Global Adjustment which offsets and subsidizes hare-brained schemes like wind and solar farms.
8. Say no to carbon taxes
Wynne wants even more green schemes, including a possible carbon tax. This is merely an excuse for another massive Liberal tax grab.
9. Stop blaming the feds
Now that Stephen Harper’s Conservative government has confirmed Ontario’s equalization transfers are exactly what the formula calls for, there is no reason for Wynne to cry foul or blame the feds for her fiscal follies.
10. Ax the travel tax
Pearson Airport is already one of the most expensive in the world. Wynne’s new travel tax will more than triple jet fuel taxes, making it even more expensive to fly.
11. Freeze the sunshine list
The only way to balance the books in Ontario is by reining in spending. The number one expense at Queen’s Park is government employee compensation; a good place to start.
12. Balance the budget
All we really want for 2015 is a balanced budget in Ontario.
Happy New Year Ontario taxpayers; here’s to hope!

“Denouncing Crimes of Lesa Humanity Committed by the Toronto Police Force”
To Serve & Protect!  The local police force has been using the motto To Serve & Protect; in order do harm indiscriminate to the poor families, vulnerable people as well as other folks. The excessive police brutality directed to children, parents, and killings of defenseless people has been causing public outcry. The impunity, the coverup, disinformation, unaccountability, corruption by the Canadian mass media to follow their principles to construct the reality of police brutality and executions of defenseless people are overwhelming and for the public to condemn. The truth is until the super guardians of the law and public order continue perpetrating aberrant crimes against the poor and helpless people, with the help of the authorities, no new report can help to improve race relations. Or until members of the Toronto police force, who committed crimes against humanity continued evading accountability despite the overwhelming evidence of their crimes will not bring any expectations for the public. The horrendous crimes committed by the Toronto police force, has jurisdiction at the International Criminal Court. Toronto’s next police chief: Five priorities set by the public
A new report details the expectations of the public and central issues for the next chief, including reining in the budget, improving race relations, handling people in crisis.

Handling of people and pet's in crisis?
The Sammy Yatim shooting, as well as the coroner’s inquest into three Toronto police shootings were on the minds of people consulted. The issue of how officers respond in situations involving emotionally disturbed people carrying perceived weapons has become increasingly important during Blair’s tenure.
Respondents expect the next chief to continue to implement de-escalation training that would help officers avoid a fatal interaction, and also devise a plan to test the skills of existing officers, ensuring that training translates into action.
He or she should also be open-minded about partnering with other agencies to provide the best response during crisis situations. Responses indicated “it is necessary to sort out instances where police action is not the best option, and to try and find other ways of addressing the problem, such as working more in concert with mental health agencies and advocates.”
Respect from rank and file
Toronto police employees were “very clear” during their consultations: the next chief needs to have the respect and trust of officers.
“This could make or break efforts to successfully implement the chief’s vision,” says the report.
The next top cop must demonstrate that he or she has walked in the shoes of officers, whether in Toronto or another major urban centre.
Mike McCormack, president of the Toronto Police Association, has previously said it could be difficult for on-the-ground officers to respect someone who has never been a police officer in Toronto.                                                                                                                                                   Chief Bill Blair Handling of people and pet's in crisis?

I honestly never got the opportunity to learn the Canadian constitution and politics during my pre-postsecondary years. And I’ve been in 2 different middle schools and 1 high school since I've been a Canadian. It’s a shame honestly because learning about our government is essential, and its actually interesting learning about Canadian politics and governance. Like you said, if you want Canadians know this stuff, they either have learn on their own, or, like me, take some college classes.
Suzanne Marion                                                                                                       Embarrassing to know that Canadians are becoming just as dumb as Americans; when it comes to NOT knowing how our government is run. We need to educate more Canadians about our system of gvt., not get into shouting match with ignorant Americans,                   among others. ... as tempting as that may be...

MourninGlori

Thank you for your rendition of our political system; you make it sound so ridiculous, which it is. Has anyone ever sat back and looked into the amount of money it takes to keep this mourning Democracy system ticking; I’ll bet you it's in the billions of dollars. No wonder we have such a deficit. If we were to take in all of our elections, the cost of MP's, MLA's, Civic
